Not AI in general. One specific friction point where AI could remove work, qualify a lead, or route a decision. The businesses that succeed pick one pain point and execute against it specifically. The ones that fail try to automate everything at once and end up with nothing working reliably.
Understand what your AI will be trained on
If the information you give it is incomplete, inconsistent, or wrong — the AI will be those things too. Faster. This is not a limitation of the technology. It is a requirement of the foundation. Garbage in, garbage out has always been true. AI just makes it more expensive and more visible.
Build guardrails before you go live
Every AI system needs a defined scope. What it answers. What it escalates. What it never touches. Those boundaries are not restrictions — they are what make the system trustworthy. An agent without guardrails is a liability. An agent with guardrails is infrastructure.
Do not build dependency
The goal is to understand what you are deploying well enough to trust it, monitor it, and modify it when the business changes. If you cannot explain what your AI does and why, you do not own it — you are just paying for it.
Know when to get help
MIT's research found that purchasing AI tools from specialized vendors and building targeted partnerships succeeded about 67% of the time — while internal builds succeeded only one-third as often. Know what you are trying to build. Then find someone who has built it before.
AI does not fail because it is bad technology. It fails because it gets deployed without a foundation, without a clear purpose, and without anyone asking the hard questions first.
The businesses that will use AI well are not the ones who moved fastest. They are the ones who moved deliberately — who understood what they were building before they built it, who chose one real problem over ten theoretical solutions, and who treated AI as infrastructure rather than decoration.
